Vierzon, the Dock of the Bassin

In Vierzon, the Canal de Berry, which runs alongside the Yèvre from the outskirts of Bourges, joins the waters of this river. Their courses merge for a few hundred metres along the “Quai du Bassin” ; it is said that the canal is “en râcle” (scraping) in the Yèvre. Then the river splits and flows into the Cher.

The Quai du Bassin, which was used to store goods waiting to be loaded, offers a beautiful panorama of the city of Vierzon. You can admire the town hall, the belfry, the Notre-Dame church, and, in the foreground, the Lucien Beaufrère square. This Art Deco-style garden is home to a rare war memorial with pacifist overtones. Created between 1929 and 1934, it is the work of sculptor Eugène Henry Karcher.

The Canal’s extra touch

Between 1966 and 1969, at the mouth of the Bassin dock, major works were carried out to fill in the  Canal basin and build a new administrative and service centre for Vierzon: the canal disappeared beneath the media library, the public finance centre, the post office and a shopping centre.

The water from the basin flows into the Cher via a branch built around 1850.
