La Perche, the river station

The Cher River, the Canal de Berry, the old national road and the railway line connecting Bourges to Montluçon pass together through the territories of the two neighbouring municipalities of La Perche and Urçay. This combination of transport routes has encouraged industrial activity.

On the banks of the canal was a sawmill, supplied with wood from the nearby Tronçais forest.  The water station, a basin designed to widen the canal's course, allowed for manoeuvring, loading, and unloading of boats.

Waterway and railway were used to transport the output of the Tronçais forges, renowned for their cables and barbed wire.

The Canal’s extra touch

La Perche’s river station has always been highly appreciated by fishermen. Thanks to the railway and the Urçay station, located in the commune of La Perche, many residents of Montluçon would go there on weekends for picnic and fishing.
